What music genres are you in charge of?
Jazz, blues and Brazilian music.
What are your favorite stations to program and why?
It changes from time to time. I like to program the top jazz station because it keeps me up to date on what's going on in jazz, but then I spend an afternoon with the Acoustic Blues station and it reminds of how amazing those early bluesmen are.
Who are your favorite artists/bands?
I've always considered myself a John Coltrane man. After that there're Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk as well as a host of current day musicians. I'm always interested in what artists like pianist Matthew Shipp and guitarist/bassist Joe Morris are up to. I think that bassist William Parker should be part of the jazz canon. Ken Vandermark continues to challenge me as a listener and I like that.
What up and coming artists/performers do you think we should be excited about?
The Malian desert music coming from bands like Tinariwen and Toumast. Carolina Chocolate Drops are doing a great job of updating the black Appalachian folk tradition.
What is your most memorable concert experience?
Geez. There's years of gigs where I saw artists like Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr. and My Bloody Valentine before they "famous." I loved playing drums in a rock band. Any time William Parker's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra plays it's an event. Seeing Amy Winehouse's American debut in New York City before the Back To Black album was released. Jon Faddis leading a big band at Newport Jazz Festival some years ago - they were playing "Manteca" and I think the band started to levitate.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure CD that you won't admit to owning - until now?
Music should never be a guilty pleasure. Just because some may consider something a little silly doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
If you were stranded on an island with 5 CDs, which ones would you choose?
1. John Coltrane - Live At the Village Vanguard boxed set.
2. Charles Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
3. Gang Of Four - Entertainment
4. Big Black - Atomizer
5. English Beat - I Just Can't Stop
If you can spend 24 hours with an artist, living or dead, who would it be?
John Coltrane
What do you think the future holds for jazz music?
Jazz will continue to evolve and change, and that is a good thing.
If you could have one superhero power, what would you choose and why?
Clone myself at random. There never seems to be enough hours in a day.
Tell us something random about yourself:
I'm a new father and its amazing how that changes your perspective.
