Although any one of these guitarists have 10 songs that could make this list, I choose all different artists to give the radio listeners some variety.

3. I am a huge fan. Picked your song For the Love of God for my 14 year old grandson's 2nd guitar recital. Now my favorite song played by my favorite person. Thank you. The song is by far one of the most beautiful songs for a guitar that I have ever heard. It just touches your soul. I am anxiously awaiting the release of your new album next month.

4. I definitely agree with #1 Europa - my favorite version is the one that appears on Viva Santana - it's nothing short of amazing - I don't know of any other version that can touch it - it must be heard to be believed.

5. Steve Vai, AOL and many other companies use "illuminati" symbols, the pyramid and the all seeing eye...
To all the people, """OPEN YOUR EYES"""

6. it's too bad vai's ego wouldn't let him mention eddie van halen ground breaking eruption. i guess he can't get pass the fact eddie is a legend, and he just has a cult like following. too bad.

7. Vai's ego?? Hey, the man only had 10 spots, it's easy to forget a band or player when you have lots of favorites. It's cool that he added some bands that are less known but who deserve a place in the spotlight. Everybody knows Eddie Van Halen but it's too bad that not every music lover knows Allan Holdsworth or the Mahavishnu Orchestra for instance. It's very clear that Steve respects Eddie a lot. There's no ego thing going on there. In fact Steve has always shown his admiration for other great players. The daily Steve is very humble. I think you mistake his entertaining part for having "an ego". On stage he's a showman, but that's all it is, it's a good entertaining show.
So back on topic: Interesting choices, Steve!

8. The only songs I thought were cheezy were the Malmteen one and Tequila, but they were at the bottom of the list anyway. After sampling these songs I think I need to expand my listening some more. By the way, I happen to like the Illuminati symbols. Maybe you can paint the tour bus gold like HC's submarine, AOL, I mean LOL!

9. migs5150 - Dude!? WTF? Eddie is totally overrated, and Vai is the real deal. Eruption is one of the easiest solos to play on guitar...it was one of the first things I learned on guitar, and Eddie is soooo overrated and couldn't pull off half of Vai's licks. Know what what you're talking about before commenting.

10. To migs5150: This isn't a list of "best" or "most famous" or even "most influential." It is a list of Steve's personal favorites. Not YOUR favorites, but Steve's. Deal with it or go away. Don't slam Steve 'cuz his faves are not the same as yours.
And I wouldn't say his following is at "cult" level. Granted, he may not have the name recognition Eddie has, but anyone who has sold millions of records is beyond "cult" status. You want "cult status" then you're talking about guys like Mike Hartman or Clark Colborn, maybe even Buckethead. Great players, but almost nobody knows who they are & they have never been on the cover of any guitar magazines. Those guys have cult followings, Steve & Eddie are both stars.
And by the way, Steve is very humble, not the ego freak you think he is.

11. Thank you Steve Vai for some new directions to explore.

12. Black Star practically started the guitar instrumental craze in the early 80's

13. I have seen both Eddie, And Vai live, and I must say, Vai is far more the showman, with a luster in his playing that defies all we expect from a guitar. No even comparable in tonal journeys, or lead patterns, this is STEVE's list, and well done, Steve brings it to the table like none other, not even me hahaha

14. What ? No West Side Story in the list ?
Oh I see... it's only instrumentals ;)
:)

15. Wow, Steve, I agree 100% that Europa by Carlos Santana is the best instrumental in rock history! Also, Joe Satriani's guitar expressions including IS THERE LOVE IN SPACE send me into heavenly orbit! To me, instrumentals are where my heart is...sexy, erotic, emotional, romantic guitar lifts me above the ordinary!

16. Few guitarist have done as much for instrumental music as the esteemed Mr. Vai. Perhaps when some of the more negative commenter's reach the upper echelon of the guitar god pantheon, they too will be asked what their top ten list is. Before that day arrives, a policy of mouths shut and ears open, should be the preferred decorum. The list is impressive, and every name on it deserves respect for creating a work of art apart from the mainstream. The list may not be what some may have expected, but they are all valid choices just the same. The term "ego" was mentioned in some of the discourse, and I would point out that none of the music listed was from the artist himself. Which would be a sign of an inflated ego. Therefore, such comments are irrelevant. I however, am not the artist, and would like to mention a personal favorite of mine entitled "Blue Powder". It is my opinion that this is the epitome of what an instrumental should be. Mr. Vai, you had outdone yourself with this particular tune, and I would like to thank you for the pleasure it has given me to hear it these many years. If you never wrote another note after that, you would still be a guitar god in my minds eye for that one. For those who are unaware of this magical song, it is suggested that you enlighten yourselves to it's moving charm.

17. I just had to comment on what migs5150 and some of the other statements. I have read many interviews with Steve Vai where he has completely acknowledged Edward's genius and his influence on the guitar. I have also read a comment Edward made about Steve Vai and his playing, and it was not complimentary at all. In fact, he said that Vai played with no feeling at all. Steve Vai has always handled himself with class and he has always been quite humble in the interviews I've read. Edward Van Halen has always been my favorite guitar player, and Steve Vai and Jimmy Page are my next favorites. I just thought you should know that Vai has never spoken disrespectfully about Edward, just the opposite.

18. Mr. Steve Vai you are an inspiration to all musicians, guitar players or not, as to what to aspire to through the love of music. Your quest to bring your listeners new and undiscovered experiences are an example of what far too few in the music industry would consider priority. It is always such an honor to hear a new project from you as I know that I will never be disappointed with the imagination, integrity and love you bring to us all with every new endeavor. God bless you!

19. I won't speak for Steve, eddie or anyone else... But I can say that music is the one place we can express the deapest emotions, love, fear, hate , lust and so on. Those who draw these truths are agents, serving those who struggle to phrase life and all it's tones, turns hills and valleys. Steve has named some whohave connected for him, each of us can add or take and indeed create a longer list than 10. Dudes we all have a right to a voice, so speak up, but I choose to tred gently in life and let the music lead me. I've enjoyed the dialog... Thanks Steve for letting us see some of the moments that lead you and thanks for ur contribution to music.

20. It's a very interesting set of songs and I kind of can see how they relate to Vai's personality as a musician....
Personally, I wouldn't have Santana on number one, but if I would, "Samba Pa Ti" is by far his best and most touching song... But there again, if you ask me I would've chosen 5 Vai's songs and 5 Satch's Those two are way above anyone else (and some hendrix too of course!)

21. Very cool you picked Yngwie, especially given your history with Alcatrazz. Also impressed you picked guys like The Champs for a slot. People like Mason Williams (Classical Gas) and Surfaris (Wipe Out) were amazing instrumentals as well. Too bad there were only 10 slots to fill. I could go on with 50 easy, including The Attitude Song, half of Passion and Warfare, and Surfing. It's a great credit to you and others like Satch, Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert and Greg Howe that keep the instrumental tradition alive.

22. Very good list, the first one I remember hearing a long time ago, now I know what it is :)Although, the closest I've heard from the voice of God is Pink Floyd's "Marooned"
Marooned- Pink Floyd
Europa- Santana
'Cause Weve Ended As Lovers- Jeff Beck
Always With Me Always With You- Joe Satriani
YYZ- Rush
Lenny- Stevie Ray Vaughan
For The Love Of God- Steve Vai
Angelina- Tommy Emmanuel
Cherokee- Peter Cincotti
Watermelon Man- Herbie Hancock
These are in no particular order, but these are just a few of my favorites :)

23. That is a great list. I would add Larry Carlton playing "Layla". Awesome !!!!

24. I would add Duane Allman as the Layla slide guitarist.

25. Sorry for arriving late to the picnic. Even a non-guitarist like me probably regrets not seeing a Morse or Allman or DiMeola on this list. But still very enjoyable to see what Mr.Vai would choose for his (mission impossible) top 10 list. Given that limitation, Steve picked some truly gifted artists. As much as I enjoy Europa, I would agree with an earlier post that Samba Pa Ti is worth a mention. How many other guitarists could play with such emotion at such an early age? and J.Beck is of course a favorite, but Vai mentions "tonal dynamics." The track included here is beautiful, yes, but still just a string-bending tribute to Roy B. If you want to hear real tonal dynamics, check out Beck's next album to hear his version of the Mingus classic "Porkpie Hat." mind-blowing.

26. Allan Holdsworth would probably take up all of my top 10 slots, but I like all of the players listed as well.

27. All I'm going to say is this: really listen to the solo Steve Vai did on the song "river of longing" for Jason Becker, and then acknowledge that he technically and emotionally, completely blew away every one of his "top ten favorites" on this list, not to mention every other solo that has ever been played. Ever. I'm not even a particularly big fan of his music, but we must learn to give credit where credit is due. Rock on...

28. What can you say to Stevie Vai? Anyone who learns under the likes of Frank Zappa ought to know- Steve your efforts are monumental- I add 'For the love of God'- Keep on keepin on

1. Even though it is not a "pure" guitar solo piece I have to say "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter group with Ronnie Montrose on guitar is one of my all time songs for guitar parts.
