Bass Player for the Eagles, Timothy B. Schmit, lists his favorite artists this week as AOL Radio's guest blogger. Eight years since his last solo album, Schmit released his 5th studio album, 'Expando' on Oct. 20. Read Schmit's blog post below and hear song selections from his new album on AOL Radio's Adult Rock station.
Nat King Cole
I believe he's still my mother's favorite singer, which is why he's on this list ... I heard him quite a lot at a young age. His early stuff with the Nat King Cole Trio is especially impressive. He was mostly known as a singer, but he was an incredible pianist as well.
Elvis Presley
Growing up as a son of a musician I was aware of many artists, mostly crooners. But, when Elvis hit the airways it was exhilarating. My first record purchase was 'Hound Dog.'
Ricky Nelson
Great songs, great records. Every week I couldn't wait to see if he was going to play on his family's TV sitcom show.
The Kingston Trio
I first started playing strumming instruments with a couple of friends during the folk era. We became obsessed with the Trio: We dressed like them, played the same type of guitars, and tried as best we could to sound like them.
The Beach Boys
My folk music friends and I found a drummer and immediately learned a bunch of surf songs. Of course, we couldn't sound like the Beach Boys, but to me they were at the pinnacle of that genre of music. Exceptional vocals!
James Brown
I was living and going to high school in Sacramento. Here I was, a young suburbanite, listening to folk and surf music, when a girlfriend, who had moved from LA, took me to a James Brown concert. I'll never forget it ... Changed my musical life.
The Beatles
Like millions of others, I completely embraced this band and this music. Every song on every album was memorable ... and then came 'Sgt. Pepper'... Wow. You can imagine how I felt, when later on in 1992, when I was part of Ringo's All Starr Band, how I felt on stage when I would turn around and see Ringo on the drums!
Bob Dylan
I was a late Dylan fan ... I think when I was younger he was a bit too much for me (even though I knew Peter, Paul, and Mary's version of 'Blowin' in the Wind' by heart). Back then I was more into music than lyrics ... When I later came into myself a bit more it became clear to me that he was a great artist.
Stevie Wonder
This man is completely tapped in musically. What a great talent. I wore out his 'Fulfillingness' album.
Alison Krauss
The first time I heard her sing I thought I was listening to an angel. One of the best live performances I've ever seen was when I saw her with Union Station.
1. Nat King Cole was one of my father's favourite musicians and of course, mine too.
