Boys Like Girls' Martin Johnson Shares His Top 10 Songs

Martin Johnson of Boys Like Girls
Boys Like Girls lead vocalist Martin Johnson is this week's guest blogger. His band saw tremendous success with their sophomore album 'Love Drunk,' bearing two hit singles -- the title track and the Taylor Swift collaboration 'Two Is Better Than One.' Check out Johnson's list below to find out which song he performed in his high school talent show and the song he deems has the best record opening.

'Cautioners'

This song would move me even if the lyrics were sang as "la la la's." Everything from the distinctly produced, chopped-up drum loop to the chime-like, one note guitar lead -- that dangles above the sharply muted rhythm guitar riff and vocal melody for the song's entirety -- sonically suck you in and pull on the heartstrings.

'Split Screen Sadness'

The bass line and dissonant keys had me already; Then I hear him challenge the Beatles with "all you need is love is a lie cause we had love but we still said goodbye" -- and I was sold. The perfect soundtrack for driving in the rain.

'Homeward Bound'

The first live musical performance I ever experienced was on a VHS recording of the legendary Simon and Garfunkel live in Central Park concert. I watched the whole show and sang along to every song pretty much every day at 3 years old. I've had a one track mind and and obsession for music and live performance ever since. After living the past four years of my life in a new city every night with barley a few months of cumulative time off, this song hits home pretty hard. No pun intended.

'Where the Streets Have No Name'

The inspirational, groundbreaking sound of U2's atmospheric and melodic blend at it's best. My favorite record opening and intro of all time.

'Line 'Em Up'

Probably James Taylor's most outspoken lyric, this song comments on the human instinct to conform. "The broken white line down the center of the doggone road" may guide you through life, but what's off the beaten path?

'The Scientist'

My favorite music video of all time. The song is so simplistic both musically and lyrically, but still somehow perfectly presents questions about fate and the butterfly effect while displaying personal regret all at once.

'Mixtape'

Butch Walker took us out on our second tour ever. i watched the entire set every night and learned so much from his performances -- most importantly how sell the emotions behind the inspiration and words of a song. This one in particular always hit me hard, as if I was inside the story.

'Let Go'

Every time I hear this song I wish I wrote it. It's the only cover Boys like Girls has really ever performed. The lyrics challenge you to make a move, even at your darkest moment.

'Evaporated'

I sang this song at my freshman year talent show. The vocal performance on the record captures such an honest tone and presentation of some pretty self-exposing personal lyrical content. It inspired me to share some deeper secrets in my own songs.

'I've Been Delivered'

Verse after verse [this song is] metaphorically detailing the urge of breaking out, making something of life and chasing your dreams; [It's about] not giving up or coming home until delivered. There was [a] boombox inside my brain that played this song on repeat through almost all of high school. Delivered. Saved. To be set free. To find an answer. I have the word "delivered" tattooed on my left arm.
