Few people in contemporary music have a voice that's as instantly recognizable as Macy Gray's. Now the soulful songstress has released a new song titled 'Beauty in the World' to help remind us that, contrary to popular belief, there actually are some beautiful things in this world besides Gray's legendary vocals. The single, from the singer's upcoming album 'The Sellout,' features Gray at her signature best, singing candidly and innocently in a way that harkens back to her sunny breakout single 'I Try.' Underscoring Gray's husky vocals and her rosy lyrics is a jaunty, lilting rhythm that fits perfectly with the song's buoyant theme. Make no mistake about it, though--the main course, as always, is Macy. When almost anyone else tells you to "Throw your hands up and holla," it may come across as trite and empty hearted. When it's coming from a voice as richly textured and self-assured as Macy Gray's, though, the words suddenly take on an extra weight of meaning. And let's face it: when Macy tells us to "Shake your booty boys and girls for the beauty in the world," it's pretty hard for anyone to say no.
As the artist recently told MTV, the optimism that oozes out of her new single is apparently a theme that will run throughout her new album. "It's just a story of my life and my career and my love life, and it's upbeat," she says of the 'The Sellout.' "It's kind of up and down and its real warm, it feels good, you know?" Adding that her "voice is a thousand times better," Gray went on to say, "I don't know if style wise it's a huge departure from what I usually do, but it's better because I'm better."
