After a six-year layoff and their first album since 2001's 'Shangri-La-Dee-Da', Stone Temple Pilots are finally releasing their first eponymous album. Hitting stores on May 25, the 'Stone Temple Pilots' album will see a deluxe release with expanded artwork and two bonus tracks. Major retailers Target will be given a CD/DVD version of the set with exclusive interview content, while Walmart will air an exclusive STP performance in stores and on its Soundcheck website.
Atlantic Records will be putting out the record, who came to work with the band after offering them a 360-deal. As lead vocalist Scott Weiland told The Pulse of the Radio, the band wanted to explore options outside of the "traditional" music industry.
According to Billboard, Weiland calls the new collection of songs a "straightforward STP rock'n'roll record. There's a lot of blues to it, a lot of R&B to it and a little Louisiana Purchase to it. But at the core, it's a rock album." 'Between the Lines' -- the album's lead single and lead off track on the album -- exemplifies just that, featuring heavy guitar-crunching riffs throughout, as well as Scott Weiland's Nirvana-esque slurs in the chorus: "I like it when we talk about love, even when we used to take drugs."
Other glam-rocking tracks are the Bowie-sounding 'First Kiss on Mars,' the bluesy 'Hickory Dichotomy' and the psychedelic 'Take a Load Off,' which highlights the DeLeo brothers' electric guitar runs.
