A planned, free New York City concert by rapper Drake was canceled Monday night, June 15, after crowds far exceeded the estimated attendance at the South Shore Seaport event. According to The Boombox, when police and organizers announced there would be no show, a small portion of the crowd began throwing bottles and chairs, starting fights that caused police to use mace and subdue several people.
Under 10,000 people were expected at the show, but fans of the rising hip-hop star began showing up early in the afternoon. By 7:00PM ET, an estimated 25,000 people had packed the seaport, causing police to declare the performance unsafe due to insufficient security.
An announcement regarding a make-up show has not been announced, as of yet. Drake apologized to his fans via his twitter account: "NYPD will not let me go on stage tonight," he wrote. "I am so disappointed. To all the devoted fans that came out I wish you could have seen what I had planned! Until next time..."
