A cover of 'Tonight, Tonight,' the 1996 single from the Smashing Pumpkins, was recently unveiled by electronic pop darlings Passion Pit as their contribution to Levi's Pioneer Sessions series. The goal of the ongoing musical program is to share songs that influenced today's artists, who rework the original as their own. And it's clear that the epic, highly orchestrated sounds of head Pumpkin Billy Corgan's best work had a large impact on Passion Pit's music.
Lead singer Michael Angelakos' amazingly high voice is perfectly suited for delivering the song's message of faith among the swirling synths and strings: "Believe in me / Believe that life can change / That you're not stuck in vain / And we're not the same / We're different tonight."
Passion Pit's version of 'Tonight, Tonight' is now available (as a free download) at the Levi Pioneer Sessions Site, and can also be heard on AOL Radio's Rock Cover Songs station.
