'The Loved Ones' Trailer -- What's the Song?

The Loved OnesNan Vernon's slow, haunting version of the classic rock chestnut 'Love Hurts' is featured on the trailer for the Australian horror movie 'The Loved Ones.' Originally recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1960, the song became widely-known in 1975 when it was covered by rock band Nazareth. Nan Vernon's version, however, seems be favored amongst horror filmakers, as her cover first appeared on the soundtrack for Rob Zombie's 2009 remake of 'Halloween II.'

There's no hidden meaning to the song's repeated "Love hurts" refrain, but together with 'The Loved Ones' trailer scenes of a high school girl and her father torturing the boy who rejected her senior prom invitation, Vernon's breathless delivery brings new depth and pathos to the popular tune.

Vernon is a singer-songwriter from Canada who was reportedly discovered by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. She has recorded several solo albums but, recently, has mostly contributed singles to various compilations and soundtracks, including a cover of 'Mr. Sandman' for Zombie's first 'Halloween' movie.

You can check out the trailer for 'The Loved Ones' below, but beware, it's got some spoilers and intense scenes. And to hear Nazareth's version of 'Love Hurts,' tune in to AOL Radio's Rock Cover Songs station.
