'XXXO,' M.I.A's first official single off her recently released buzz-worthy album ',/\/\/\ Y /\,' (note: the controversial 'Born Free' was her first digital single) pulls from electro-punk, hip-hop and pop, among other genres. With chanting, yet melodic vocals in the chorus and genre-bending back beats -- produced by Rusko and Blaqstarr and similar-sounding to the percussion-heavy intro in Information Society's 1988 hit 'What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)' -- the single reaches new levels with its remix, highlighted by Jay-Z.
Like other Jay-Z/ M.I.A. collabs such as 'Swagger Like Us' and 'Boyz,' Jay-Z flows fittingly over the song's back beats, boosting, 'Ya'll just so metrosexual / this is not my political correct flo / this is more like letting that tec blow."
The Jay-Z remix is not off her official album, but can be found on the 'XXXO (The Remixes)' EP, currently available on iTunes. To hear the remix of 'XXXO,' go to AOL Radio's New Pop First station.
