Godsmack mainman Sully Erna has emerged with 'Sinner's Prayer,' the first song from his debut solo album 'Avalon.' The album, which Erna worked on for over seven years, will be available in stores on Sept. 14.
'Sinner's Prayer' features a very different sound compared to Godsmack's typical metallic roar -- in 'Cryin' Like a Bitch' for example -- from their best-selling 2010 album 'The Oracle.'
Tribal drums and strong female backing vocals set a ruminative, hypnotic mood as Erna expresses regret over some unspoken sin from the past: "I am a sinner / all my friends left to the side / I am a sinner / Heaven's closed for what I've done."
Erna, who frequently plays drums on stage with Godsmack, seems to have delivered on his promise to make a diverse, exotic record. As he recently told Billboard: "It's gonna be very Native American tribal rhythms mixed with these Middle Eastern bluesy kind of vocals. This is a project to get a different kind of music out of me that I feel is inside me."
He also dispelled any rumors that his main band may be splitting up: "The band's in great shape. Everybody's just kinda doing something on the side that's a little different than what we'd do from Godsmack."
Indeed, Erna will be playing a handful of shows with Godsmack in early September. You can check out a different sound from Erna with 'Sinner's Prayer,' in rotation now over on AOL Radio's New Rock First station.
