Just in time for back-to-school shopping, L.L. Bean hopes to remind everyone how durable their backpacks are by using a 90 year old song, Harry McClintock's 'Big Rock Candy Mountain,' in their new TV commercial.
As students are shown heading to class and campers hike through the fall foliage, McClintock, also known as "Haywire Mac," gently strums and plucks at his acoustic guitar while singing about the titular mountain, nestled in: "A land far away / Besides the crystal fountains."
Apparently it's a hobo's paradise, where: "There ain't no snow / Where the winds don't blow," and even better:" There's a lake of stew / And of whiskey too / You can paddle all around it."
The song gained new popularity back in 2000 when it was included in the movie and accompanying soundtrack for the Coen Brothers' modern classic 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?,' which told the depression-era story of escaped convicts who found redemption partially by singing folk music.
You can check out the commercial below. Admit it, with all the heat we've gotten this summer, those brown leaves and chilly nights look pretty tempting, right?
