Pantera, 'The Will to Survive' -- New Song

Hey metalheads, wanna feel old? Pantera just unearthed the song 'The Will to Survive' from their vaults to commemorate the 20th (!) anniversary of their classic 1990 album 'Cowboys from Hell.'

The song highlights a deluxe three-CD anniversary edition of the album, which also includes a live album and demos of each of the original album's songs. The set is due in stores on Sept. 14.

The track finds Pantera right on the cusp of their transition from glam-metal followers to hardcore-punk influenced metal pioneers. The clean, highly produced sound of the song sounds very much like mid-'80s Judas Priest; and instead of his trademark gruff vocal delivery, frontman Philip Anselmo's piercing falsetto sounds more like Geoff Tate of Queensryche.

However, it's already clear the band is pushing at the boundaries of the format, from the ridiculously aggressive and complex drumming to the thrilling guitar break (courtesy of the late, great Dimebag Darrell), that winds up the track.

Of course, Pantera split up in 2003, and Dimebag's tragic death in 2004 ended any chance of a reunion for the band. However, the three surviving members are still active; Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown in metal supergroup Down, and Darrell's brother Vinnie as part of the supergroup Hellyeah.

You can listen to 'The Will to Survive' exclusively over on Pantera's Facebook page.
