Clattering percussion and high, metronomic piano set the stage for Michele's rich, jazz-trained vocals to shine on this inspirational mid-tempo song, and she takes full advantage with a warm, histrionic-free performance.
It should be noted that she's not brazenly declaring herself a star like Prince did on his similarly-titled song back in 1983, but instead stepping away from a bad relationship and re-affirming her own worth:
"Baby I'm a star tonight / I'm up in the sky tonight / For the world to see / I'm not thinking about you / Baby, I'm-a do me tonight / I'm up in the sky tonight / so give me one more dream cause I'm shining."
Michele discovered jazz signing at age 17, studied vocal and jazz performance at college, and has quickly risen through the ranks as a recording artist, releasing two solo albums as well as writing and singing the hooks for hit songs by Jay-Z and Nas.
Chrisette has been updating fans about her upcoming new album via her twitter page, but as of yet neither a release date nor an album title have not been announced. No worries, you can listen to 'I'm a Star' today over on AOL Radio's New R&B First station.
