Bruce Springsteen fanatics get their first taste of the heaven that awaits them this fall with 'Save My Love.' The song is from 'The Promise,' a double-disc collection of unreleased recordings from his 1978 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' recording sessions.
Apparently quite nervous about following up the massively successful 'Born to Run' album, Bruce recorded dozens of extra songs for the follow-up, with his primary concern being that all chosen songs fit together thematically. Therefore, several potential hit singles were left off the album. Many were soon hits for other artists, including 'Because the Night' by Patti Smith and 'Fire' by the Pointer Sisters.
Even under those strict guidelines, it's hard to understand why 'Save My Love' was left behind, as it features Bruce and his band in full piano-anthem roar. In a voice that sounds much more weathered than we remember him sounding back then, Bruce vows his romantic loyalty:
"There's a prayer coming through the air / And it's shot straight through my heart / Tearing open the evening sky and tearing me apart / Now I'll ride that signal down the line / I'm home again with you / So turn up your radio / And I'll save my love for you."
'The Promise,' as well as a massive six-disc 'The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story' box set, will be in stores on Nov. 16. In the meantime, you can travel back to 1978 and turn up your radio to hear 'Save My Love,' now featured on AOL Radio's Adult Rock station.
