Exclusively on AOL Radio's Video Game Scores station, fans can now hear a track every hour, at the top of the hour, from the new Echoes of War CD. Echoes of War features fully orchestrated arrangements of the best music Blizzard Entertainment has had to offer over the past decade. You will also be treated to a glimpse of the future, as Echoes of War debuts the stirring music from StarCraft II, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, and Diablo III for the first time on compact disc.

With an all-star team featuring the Eminence Symphony Orchestra and special guests including composer Kow Otani (Shadow of the Colossus) and arrangers Go Shiina and Bill Motzing (The Simpsons, LA Confidential), we invite you to stay awhile and listen. There's nothing out there that matches the scale and approach of Echoes of War, so please join us for this celebration of the music from Blizzard Entertainment.

This premiere is happening right now through Sunday evening, exclusively on AOL Radio's Video Game Scores station. Click the link below to start listening now.

Each week, we'll be profiling one of the D.J.'s at AOL Radio who are responsible for bringing you the music. Here's a look at Mary, who is in charge of the World & International music stations.

Name:

Mary

Location:

Rural Western Washington

What music genres are you in charge of?

Most of the non-Spanish language World Music stations plus Americana, Folk, Bluegrass, Female Focus.

What are your favorite stations to program and why?

African, hands down, it's the mother of us all and if you listen well you can hear the seeds of all music rattling about in the various regions.

Who are your favorite artists/bands?

I have no boundaries. Any song that makes the needles on my soul meter jump, then I'm on board. Over the years the people always in the first breath include; XTC, Muddy Waters, Beau Jacques, AC/DC, Toumani Diabate, Kermit Ruffins and whatever the latest previously unknown to me artist or genre that I come across.

What up and coming artists/performers do you think we should be excited about?

I just (belatedly) discovered Fred Eaglesmith so he's up and coming in my book. "Bow Thayer & Perfect Trainwreck" is a fine follow up to "Spend it All", which I played the snot out of. I can't wait to set the lasers on stun and wear out the disc. First blush listenings have given me several favorite new songs. It's rare an artist this prolific and talented gets past me but that he did. Look for more from Fred on the Americana and Folk stations.

What is your most memorable concert experience?

U2 Joshua Tree tour. They opened in Tempe, AZ, and I emceed the show. Bono had fallen off the stage in rehearsal the night before opening and cut his chin so badly they had to delay the tour start by one day. Then he couldn't sing very strong that first night and the Edge carried a lot of the parts but so did the crowd. The disc had been out for days but we all knew all the words. Then they ended the tour in Tempe in December, where they filmed "Rattle & Hum". They came on my show at KUPD the night before the first night of filming and stayed for hours and sang country songs and went out and hung with the crowd outside.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure CD that you won't admit to owning - until now?

No guilt.

If you were stranded on an island with 5 CDs, which ones would you choose?

Little Feat - Waiting for Columbus
Toumani Diabate - The Mande Variations
Beatles - Rubber Soul
John Hiatt - Bring the Family
Jorma Kaukonen - Quah

If you can spend 24 hours with an artist, living or dead, who would it be?

Ali Farke Toure

What do you think the future holds for world/international music in the U.S. ?

I have learned so much about world history and the world as it stands today from listening to world music and finding out about the players and listening to the lyrics. Even before translating the words you can hear experience and lessons in the tones. People are hungry for change and as our election demonstrated, we will go for it. Turning away from a manufactured musical landscape can be a big part of that change. If we choose to live within our means will it mean more people deciding that they can make their own music so the handmade music of other countries becomes more treasured? That would be beautiful.

If you could have one superhero power, what would you choose and why?

Bio-location so I can move in the blink of an eye when the sh*t comes down.

Tell us something random about yourself:

I'm learning how to bio-locate

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Having trouble loading AOL Radio in AOL?

We have received emails from AOL members who are having trouble listening to AOL Radio when using the AOL software. We have identified the cause and are working as quickly as possible to correct it. In the mean time, you will find suggestions below on how to fix the problem yourself until we can make the internal fix.

Option #1) Use Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari to run AOL Radio - This is the EASIEST fix

Since Internet Explorer comes with all Windows computers, this would be the preferred method.

a) Launch Internet Explorer

[Go to the "Start" menu on your XP or Vista Computer, browse through your programs to find Internet Explorer]

b) After loading a new browser window, type http://www.aolradio.com in the address window and hit enter.

c) Launch AOL Radio as you would normally do inside of AOL.

Option #2) Use Our Temporary Mini-Player

We have a temporary mini-player that will work for all AOL users. Click on this link:

http://music.aol.com/radioguide/aol

to load this player.

Option #3) Change Your Version of Flash to Run AOL Radio inside AOL - Advanced Users Only

a) Inside of AOL, please visit this website: http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/

b) At the Adobe website, it will have a box that says VERSION INFORMATION (I've circled it above).

c) If it says 9,0,115,0 - you should upgrade to version 9,0,1510. Follow these steps

1) To upgrade your Flash player to 9,0,151,0, go to this link: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/installers/current/9/install_flash_player_9_ax.exe

2) If it asks you whether you want to run the file, hit "Run"

3) When finished installing, quit out of AOL and any web browsers you may have open.

4) Launch AOL again. Go to this page: http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/ to make sure you are running version 9,0,151,0.

5) Try launching AOL Radio again.

d) If it says 10,0,12,36, you must UNINSTALL this version of Flash and install an earlier version of Flash. To uninstall Flash:

1) Go to "Start" on your Windows computer. Find your "Control Panel" (it should either be in the Start Menu already or inside the "Settings" tab, depending on your Windows configuration)

2) Click on "Add or Remove Programs".

3) In the box that appears, click on Adobe Flash Player ActiveX and then hit the "Remove" button.

4) If you have another program underneath that says Adobe Flash Player, highlight that option and hit "Remove" as well.

5) Inside AOL, go to this link: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/installers/current/9/install_flash_player_9_ax.exe .

6) If it asks you whether you want to run the file, hit "Run"

7) When finished installing, quit out of AOL and any web browsers you may have open. Reboot your computer.

8) Launch AOL and sign-in again.

9) Try launching AOL Radio again.

Profile
Each week, we'll be profiling one of the D.J.'s at AOL Radio who are responsible for bringing you the music. Here's a look at Tad, who is in charge of the Jazz & Blues music stations.

Name:

Tad

Location:

Jersey City, NJ

What music genres are you in charge of?

Jazz, blues and Brazilian music.

What are your favorite stations to program and why?

It changes from time to time. I like to program the top jazz station because it keeps me up to date on what's going on in jazz, but then I spend an afternoon with the Acoustic Blues station and it reminds of how amazing those early bluesmen are.

Who are your favorite artists/bands?

I've always considered myself a John Coltrane man. After that there're Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk as well as a host of current day musicians. I'm always interested in what artists like pianist Matthew Shipp and guitarist/bassist Joe Morris are up to. I think that bassist William Parker should be part of the jazz canon. Ken Vandermark continues to challenge me as a listener and I like that.

What up and coming artists/performers do you think we should be excited about?
The Malian desert music coming from bands like Tinariwen and Toumast. Carolina Chocolate Drops are doing a great job of updating the black Appalachian folk tradition.

What is your most memorable concert experience?

Geez. There's years of gigs where I saw artists like Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr. and My Bloody Valentine before they "famous." I loved playing drums in a rock band. Any time William Parker's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra plays it's an event. Seeing Amy Winehouse's American debut in New York City before the Back To Black album was released. Jon Faddis leading a big band at Newport Jazz Festival some years ago - they were playing "Manteca" and I think the band started to levitate.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure CD that you won't admit to owning - until now?

Music should never be a guilty pleasure. Just because some may consider something a little silly doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

If you were stranded on an island with 5 CDs, which ones would you choose?

1. John Coltrane - Live At the Village Vanguard boxed set.
2. Charles Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
3. Gang Of Four - Entertainment
4. Big Black - Atomizer
5. English Beat - I Just Can't Stop

If you can spend 24 hours with an artist, living or dead, who would it be?

John Coltrane

What do you think the future holds for jazz music?

Jazz will continue to evolve and change, and that is a good thing.

If you could have one superhero power, what would you choose and why?

Clone myself at random. There never seems to be enough hours in a day.

Tell us something random about yourself:

I'm a new father and its amazing how that changes your perspective.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Election Day Programming

Each week, we'll be profiling one of the D.J.'s at AOL Radio who are responsible for bringing you the music. Here's a look at Joe, who is in charge of the Classical & Broadway music stations.

Name:

Joseph aka "Opera Joe"

Which music genres are you in charge of?

I program Classical and Broadway

What are your favorite stations to program, and why?

I love to program discovery stations, like Classical 101, it gives me the widest breadth to combine the extremely popular with the random historic yet forgotten works. I like Mash-up stations also, like themed stations that require a little editorial, current events commentary in music.

Who are your favorite artists/bands?

I will be a Pavarotti fan until the day I die, but I can say the same of early Metallica. Hillary Hahn is an amazing violinist and pretty hip. I love the composer Jay Greenberg, he's like a 16 year old musical genius. Bruno Walter, long gone now, is my favorite
Conductor, very passionate and yet patient.

What up and coming artists/performers do you think we should be excited about?

1. Pianist Jonathan Biss, amazing talent and a brilliant maturing prodigy.
2. Angela Brown, The next true Diva.
3. Gustavo Dudamel, Exciting conductor with a master's attention to detail the vigor of youth.

What was your music experience before joining AOL Radio?

I was a professional opera singer for most of life, then fell into software and then worked at iTunes and brought classical music there, then to MTV, where I won the employee talent show with a Opera Rock Mash-up and programmed classical radio and did editorial for the now defunct MTV Urge Music Store. I miss singing all the time, but I love advocate for musical equality in cyberspace.

Opera Joe Wins MTV Talent Show

What is your most memorable concert experience?

Wow, that's tough. I had have to say the memorial concert of Violinist Joseph Gingold,

Every student and alumni from the Indiana University School of Music came and played the Adagio for Strings, that piece from Platoon, everyone on one stage, famous alumni like Joshua Bell and first year students over a thousand strings, vocalists, any instrument. A life dedicated to teaching music rewarded in such a way, I swear I could see him float to heaven, I've never been that moved by musical moment again. It is the power of classical music, the history of human emotions captured in instances music. That's why I love Rock too 75 years from now it will be classical.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure CD that you won't admit to owning - until now?

OK, OK, this is going to hurt. Disney's Aladdin, with Robin Williams and Brad Kane, I'm a total prostitute for cheap sentiment and every day is a chance for a "Whole New World"

If you were stranded on an island with 5 CDs, which ones would you choose?

1. Il Trovatore - RCA - Leontyne Price, Placido Domingo, Sherrill Milnes - my first opera recording, bought it by mistake, was never the same again.
2. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony - Wilhelm Furtwängler, Wiener Philharmoniker - transcendence of the human soul in music - we are a brotherhood.
3. Master of Puppets - Metallica - my first and best rock show.
4. Gilbert & Sullivan HMS Pinafore/Trial by Jury - Sir Malcolm Sargent -if you check out the lyrics in contrast to the music, this is some very funny stuff, political satire.
5. The Science Fiction Album - Symphony of the City of Prague. It is hard as a classical geek to admit how much I love soundtracks, especially Sc-fi and fantasy.

If you can spend 24 hours with an artist, living or dead, who would it be?

Beethoven, hands down. Not even to talk but to watch. Just to see how he coped with his tinnitus (ringing in the ears) how he could break his imagination out of the basest of humanity to cut the sonic waves with tradition breaking forms and sonorities. If ever a person was touched by God, it was certainly Beethoven. Is genius like this a gift or reaction to environment? Yes a nature walk with Beethoven would be a dream fulfilled.

What do you think the future holds for classical music?

For me the future is in "classical music". For my entire life I've heard that classical music is on verge of disappearing in the USA. True, the money has dried up, but every major classical institution has remained alive, universities fill every year with new students who aspire to classical careers, and really every where else in the world classical music lives not only in the tradition of the past, but in the inspired composers of today. Every Rock and Rap musician I have ever met still looks to the academy and the academy looks to the industry, where we have probably digressed is in the relationships, talent is talent and a great musical experience really knows no genre. In the 21st Century I believe that Classical should become synonymous with experiment or playground, let the fusion of the arts occur, bring new generations to where the "happenings" are. Live musical events that encompass the history of humanity in all musical languages. This has been the playfulness that is classical music tradition and will continue on.

Video games, I wish they had been this cool when I was a kid. Halo 3, Oblivion, GTA4, Resident Evil, Assassin's Creed, Puzzle Quest. I like to write children's stories...I have book called Opera Joe, a kid who discovers the world thru music.

If you could have one superhero power, what would you choose and why?

Invisibility, oh yeah, I could go anywhere, do anything, hear anything.

Tell us something random about yourself:

A few weeks ago, I told you about the Christmas stations that we launched early this year. Today we have one more to add and it's approved for the young ones. Check out Kidz Christmas - a collection of Christmas music including favorites from Sesame Street, the Looney Tunes, The Grinch and more.

Also for those of you who listen to Classical music, you may have noticed that 20th Century is absent from the player. The station isn't gone; it simply has been renamed to Modern Classical. So check out if you haven't gotten the chance.

We have identified the cause and are working as quickly as possible to correct it. In the mean time, you will find suggestions below on how to fix the problem yourself until we can make the internal fix.

1) Use Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari to run AOL Radio - This is the EASIEST fix

2) If you still would like to use AOL, follow these steps:

a) Inside of AOL, please visit this website: http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/

b) At the Adobe website, it will have a box that says VERSION INFORMATION (I've circled it above).

c) If it says 9,0,115,0 - you should upgrade to version 9,0,124,0. Follow these steps

1) To upgrade your Flash player to 9,0,124,0, go to this link: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/installers/current/9/install_flash_player_9_ax.exe

2) If it asks you whether you want to run the file, hit "Run"

3) When finished installing, quit out of AOL and any web browsers you may have open.

4) Launch AOL again. Go to this page: http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/ to make sure you are running version 9,0,124,0.

Thanks. As always, send me a note at: TCinRadioNYC@aol.com if you are still having problems.
