07 ‘I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas’

The success of this funny Christmas song in 1953 gave the Oklahoma City Zoo the idea to start a fundraising campaign to “buy a hippo for Gayla,” which the zoo needed at the time. Rivers once gained national attention for an eleven-day-long marathon during which he vowed to remain on the air until the Baltimore Orioles won a game (a promise he was able to fulfill).
