Top R&B Songs of 2009

The Top R&B Songs of 2009 confront heartache, sex, and love. For people who have recently gone through a break up, it's best to have a box of tissues handy before you proceed (excluding No. 10 and No. 1, which are perfect to play when getting in the mood). The mix of songs on the list remind us that each relationship can bring us love, lust, or even heartache. So while Letoya has "regrets," and Chrisette Michele sings about having an "epiphany," Trey Songz boasts about having "invented sex," Jeremih has "birthday sex," and R. Kelly is well, "number one." Here are this year's Top R&B Songs, as voted by AOL Radio listeners.

Jeremih Birthday Sex10) Jeremih: 'Birthday Sex'

What more could you want for your birthday than old fashion birthday sex? The song was inspired by Jeremih's own experiences -- the song peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, No. 1 on Ringtones, No. 3 for Radio Songs, and No. 4 on Hot 100. The song was originally called 'Birthday Text.'

Pleasure Under9) Pleasure P: 'Under'

'Under' peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Funny how at age 24, Pleasure P boasts about being all grown up.

Maxwell Pretty Wings8) Maxwell: 'Pretty Wings'

This top R&B song from 2009 is about how Maxwell's last relationship ended; he left so he could be free to find someone new to love. The song was a hit, peaking No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop Songs chart and earning a 2010 Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.

Chrisette Michele Epiphany I'm Leaving7) Chrisette Michele: 'Epiphany (I'm Leaving)'

Michele sings about how she is leaving her boyfriend. Channel Ella Fitzgerald and you'll understand why her song 'Epiphany' is the perfect break up song. Other songs on the album -- 'Blame It On Me' and 'Porcelain Doll' -- are also good to tune into if you are going to break up with someone, already did break up with someone...or are thinking about breaking up with someone.

Letoya Regret6) Letoya: 'Regret'

Featuring Ludacris, this top R&B song is about the aftermath of a relationship, when the dude regrets leaving his lady and is trying to get back with her. Told with a straight shooting, tell-it-like-is tone, it's not surprising that the song peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

R Kelly Number One5) R. Kelly: 'Number One'

In the music video, R. Kelly and featured Keri Hilson wore Michael Jackson-like jackets. 'Number One' sounds like a typical song that would play at a high school prom with such lyrics as, "This one here's a race where you don't wanna come first."

Ginuwine Last Chance4) Ginuwine: 'Last Chance'

Ginuwine sings about how he's trying to save a relationship, but only has one shot. In the song, he sings "If I only got one shot to win you / Then call me Jordan 4th quarter in 92." The phrase refers Michael Jordan's memorable performance in the Bulls vs. Bullets game, where he scored 51 points, 20 of them in the final quarter, including six in the final 1:09.

Trey Songz I Need a Girl3) Trey Songz: 'I Need a Girl'

This 2009 tune will get stuck in your head. You can't say we didn't warn you. Songz sings about looking for his dream girl -- so listen up ladies, he needs a girl, like ASAP.

Mario Break Up2) Mario: 'Break Up'

Mario wants you to know he knows what women go through when they are in relationships. While soothing, this top R&B song sounds more like a chant than a song. Unlike 'I Need A Girl,' this song won't play over and over again in your head, but it's just as good!

Trey Songz I Invented Sex1) Trey Songz: 'I Invented Sex'

The video is not suitable for children under 18: It begins with Songz seducing a girl, he drives her to his crib, and eventually he takes her to the bedroom. The rest of the video has hinges of soft porn. According to this 2009 song (featuring rapper Drake), Songz is so good in bed that you'd think he "invented sex."
