Rising country star Justin Moore has released the debut single, 'If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away,' off his forthcoming sophomore album.
Moore, who rose to fame on the success of confrontational southern rock singles like 'I Could Kick Your Ass' and 'Back That Thing Up,' steps back on 'If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away' with a gentler, contemplative voice that enriches his authentic Arkansas twang.
The song is a mellow country ballad filled with the wistful and familiar images of his genre, including wise elders; rundown pick-up trucks; and working the best fishing holes next to Grandpa. The central theme is an imagined scenario many of us wish for: the ability to cross (if only briefly) the mortal divide and reconnect with loved ones lost long ago.
Moore sings, "If heaven wasn't so far away / I'd pack up the kids and go for the day / Introduce them to their grandpa / Watch 'em laugh at the way he talks."
The song's lyrics hinge on nostalgia and the inexorable static of memory, though they also suggest the story of a family man growing older and beginning to confront the reality of his own mortality.
Moore's second studio album, as-yet untitled, is scheduled to be released later this year.
