For the most part, Maines' vocal performance is faithful to the 1966 original, though the instrumentation has changed quite a bit. The remake features a prominent slide guitar that complements piano, organ and drums provided by Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The twangy arrangement comes as a bit of a surprise, since even the Chicks themselves questioned whether they wanted to continue recording country music after many of the genre's fans shunned them following their anti-President Bush comments in 2003.
Aside from a duet on Neil Diamond's 2008 album, Maines has been quiet since the Chicks' 2006 record 'Taking the Long Way.' But with fellow Chicks Emily Robison and Martie Maguire continuing to perform as the Courtyard Hounds, this seems like a good time for Maines to pursue solo projects.
Composed by Brian Wilson, 'God Only Knows' appeared on the Beach Boys' album 'Pet Sounds.' The Maines cover, produced by Rick Rubin, will appear on the 'Big Love' finale that airs on Sunday, March 20.
