It's that time of year again for football, turkey, and oh yeah-giving thanks. We at AOL Radio decided to celebrate this year's holiday by putting together the top ten songs about giving thanks. Perhaps some of these songs can be recited at your Thanksgiving table. Until then, while you dream of gravy, take a look below at the best songs about being thankful. Enjoy!
'I Thank You'
Sam & Dave
This top ten single was written by David Porter and Issac Hayes and released in 1968. The soulful tune packs as much punch as 'Hold on I'm Coming' by the duo. Upbeat and cheerful, Sam & Dave thank someone for loving them, even though all this love isn't necessary. They preach their gratitude throughout the song: "All my life I've been shortchanged/Without your love baby, it's a crying shame."
'Thank You for Being a Friend'
Pop rocker Andrew Gold had a big hit in the late 70's with this upbeat pop track 'Thank You for Being a Friend.' The song was re-recorded years later by Cynthia Fee as the theme song for the sitcom 'The Golden Girls.' The back and forth repertoire where 'I Want to thank you' and 'Thank you for being a friend' is repeated, stands out in the catchy tune. Gold adds in the song: "Have no fear, even though it's hard to hear, I will stand real close and say, thank you for being a friend."
Sly & The Family Stone
Speaking of catchy, Sly & The Family Stone brought funk music into the mainstream with their 1969 feel-good hit 'Thank You.' The influential song includes references to many of their previously songs and features bassist Larry Graham, who famously used the then-new technique of slap-bass. The soulful chorus featured the memorable theme of the song: "Thank you for letting me be myself again." .
'Thank God I'm a Country Boy'
'Thank God I'm a Country Boy' is a classic country folk song written by John Martin Sommers and famously performed by John Denver. Sommers wrote the song while on a road trip and was inspired by how happy and thankful he was in his life. The song is upbeat, typical of an older Country western. Denver's version had cross-over appeal, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
'Thank You' by Dido was used as one of the most famous samples in hip-hop history, included in the acclaimed Eminem single 'Stan.' Although Dido's tune is often remembered for that, Dido wrote the song as a tribute to her boyfriend for her debut album 'No Angel.' The pop, soft ballad successfully introduced Dido's voice to the world and is a peaceful, soothing track. Dido thanks her boyfriend for giving her 'the best day of my life.'
Kelly Clarkson had a lot to be thankful about by the time her debut studio album of the same name was released. After winning season one of 'American Idol,' Clarkson produced this successful album including the title track in which she thanks those who have been there for her, by her side. The mid-tempo tune contains an R&B like beat, relying heavily on Clarkson's strong voice. She sings in the tune: "Don't you know that I'm thankful for the moment/when I'm down you always know how to make me smile/thankful for the joy that your bringing in my life."
'Thank You' was the first Led Zeppelin song which singer Robert Plant wrote all the lyrics for. He wrote the 1969 song for his then-wife Maureen and it established the singer as one of the best rock and roll song-writers. The song famously includes unique organ playing by John Paul Jones and was a concert favorite from the band's extensive catalog. It was also rare, because Jimmy Page played an acoustic guitar on the track. Yet, the strongest part of the tune was Plant's lyrics. "And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles/Thank to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one."
Country star Martina McBride reached number one on the country charts with this 2001 hit 'Blessed' off her 'Greatest Hits' album. The upbeat, celebratory song has a memorable, pop feel and features McBride singing about many different ways in which she is blessed. She describes her children and home-life and thanks God for everything she has been given. She adds: "Sometimes I sit on my front porch swing, just soaking up the day/I think to myself this world is a beautiful place."
'Thank You For Loving Me'
Bon Jovi hit the top 40 charts with his 2000 single 'Thank You for Loving Me' off his album 'Crush.' The love ballad is similar to previous hits 'Always' and 'Bed of Roses.' This single is a perfect, modern wedding song as Bon Jovi sings about his heartfelt feelings towards a loved one. He has said the song was inspired by Brad Pitt's character in the movie 'Meet Joe Black.' It's one of the most stripped-down songs of Bon Jovi's career, but his lyrics stand out. "I never knew I had a dream until that dream was you/When I look into your eyes, the sky's a different blue."
Following a trip to India, Alanis Morisette co-wrote this rock hit with Glen Ballard called 'Thank U.' The pop rock song was featured as her first single from her 1998 album 'Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie.' The song became a huge hit and was Morisette's reflection to her conflicted feelings she experienced following success. Although it was a scary and confusing time for her, Morsiette expresses her gratitude in the single for everyone around her. Morisette's powerful self-reflections are seen throughout the memorable song: "How bout me not blaming you for everything/how bout me enjoying the moment for once." And she would soon have even more to be thankful for as 'Thank U' helped her album set the record for most copies sold by a female artist in its first week.
