Since 2006, R&B singer-songwriter Ne-Yo has been one of the most successful artists, turning out many hits and selling millions of records. His first album 'In My Own Words' debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and jumpstarted his career. To date, Ne-Yo's discography has included four albums, including 'Because of You,' which also reached number one. Ne-Yo has also collaborated on many hit singles over the years and doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Ne-Yo's fifth studio album, 'R.E.D.' is expected to be released this fall. We take a look back at his career with the top 10 songs from Ne-Yo, as rated by AOL Radio listeners.
Released in 2010 as the second single from Ne-Yo's fourth album, 'Libra Scale,' 'Champagne Life' was produced by Detroit Producer D. DoRohn Gough. The single tells the story of three garbage men who receive everything they could ever want, except for love (which is the main theme of the album.) Specifically here is where they first receive their powers. The catchy tune is reminiscent of Michael Jackson's music and was a big hit in both the United States and Japan.
'Knock You Down'
Keri Hilson feat. Kanye West & Ne-Yo
Ne-Yo was featured, along with Kanye West on this track by Keri Hilson. Ne-Yo, along with West, helped write the song and appears as a love interest in the music video. There are references in the song to Michael Jackson, who passed away a day after the song was released. The hit single, peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum in New Zealand.
This up-tempo tune was released as the first single off of the concept album 'Libra Scale' and was produced by Stargate. The single tells the story of one of the characters of the story, Jerome, who is still attracted to a girl, although she's transformed into a 'monster,' with superpowers.
'Give Me Everything'
Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo & Afrojack
One of the biggest hits in 2011 was Pitbull's 'Give Me Everything,' which featured Ne-Yo, who sang the chorus/hook of the song. This track, which has become a dance favorite, was produced by DJ Afrojack and also features model/actress Nayer. The song was one of the biggest selling digital songs of all time, selling 8.2 million copies. Additionally, 'Give Me Everything' hit #1 in many countries, including the United States and Canada.
This European-influenced disco-sounding single was produced by Stargate and was the first single off Ne-Yo's third studio album 'Year of the Gentlemen.' The song differs from most of Ne-Yo's material, focusing more on dance pop, instead of more R&B type sounds.
Also off 'Year of the Gentlemen' was 'Miss Independent,' which samples the song 'Forget About Me,' by Lil Bit. The top 10 single resembles Ne-Yo's core style. Ne-Yo wanted to remind his friends who he was with this track. The single charted in many countries and topped the Hot R&B charts in the United States.
'Hate That I Love You'
Rihanna feat. Ne-Yo
Stargate, who has contributed to so many of Ne-Yo's hits wrote and produced this Rihanna hit, along with Ne-Yo who provided vocals on the track. The 2007 single was a top 10 hit and was certified platinum in America. Ne-Yo and Rihanna are both in the music video, which involves both singers meeting their respective love interests.
'Because of You'
'Because of You' is the first single off Ne-Yo's second album of the same name. The song combined dance-pop beats with a unique R&B style, featuring multiple melodic instruments. The single, which is a continuation of his 2007 single 'Sexy Love,' peaked at #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Five other versions of the song exist, including one with Michael Jackson, and another with an extended ending.
The third single off of 'Year of the Gentleman,' 'Mad' was a top 5 R&B hit in 2008. The ballad features Ne-Yo singing about being in an insecure relationship. This is illustrated in the black and white music video, in which Ne-Yo argues with his girlfriend and is then killed in a car accident. The music video appears to resemble 'The Sixth Sense' and was voted as one of the top 100 music videos on BET during 2009.
Ne-Yo's most successful single, was his first one, 'So Sick,' which was released in 2006 off his debut album 'In My Own Words.' The track, which was also produced by Stargate, is simply a love song about being tired of hearing other love songs. The smooth R&B track was a worldwide hit and was number one single in both the UK and America.
