Most notably, this is the first 'Glee' record that will include two original songs, 'Loser Like Me' and 'Get it Right,' which won't debut on the show until March 15, one week after the record's release.
'Loser Like Me,' is an upbeat, car-windows-down-and-stereo-cranked-in-July jam, featuring Lea Michele and Cory Monteith, Glee's on-again, off-again couple Rachel and Finn. The series' music producer Adam Anders called it a "Gleek anthem" in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview.
The single was co-written by famed producer Max Martin, who has created a number of hits for pop stars including Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Pink, and has had 10 number-one hits in the last two years alone.
The second, 'Get It Right,' is a piano-drenched ballad given solely to Michele and her soaring, plaintive voice. It's a classic breakup song with a sound that lends itself to the theatrical-minded production (think lavish string harmonies and booming percussion) of modern diva ballads.
The rest of the album features 14 covers, including: Justin Bieber's 'Baby'; Lady Antebellum's 'Need You Now'; Prince's 'Kiss'; and the mashup of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 'Heads Will Roll' from the show's special post-Super Bowl show.
Since the first season of 'Glee' debuted in September 2009, the cast has released a staggering amount of music -- six soundtracks, four compilations, three EPs and 157 singles -- and no single word can describes its success. In less than two years, 'Glee' has charted more singles on Billboard's Hot 100 chart than any group in history.
Earlier this month, six new 'Glee' tunes hit the Billboard chart, bringing the cast's number of charted singles to 113. Elvis Presley, whose record the 'Glee' cast broke, had 108 singles on the chart over a 45-year period (posthumous releases count; releases before the chart was created do not).
By comparison, the Beatles have landed 71 songs on the Hot 100 chart-over the course of 32 years. A Billboard writer recently mused that if 'Glee' continues at its current pace, it could more than double its Hot 100 count to 250 by the end of its third season in spring 2012.
