Clapton was backed by Dire Straits for a surprise performance of the love tune at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute in 1988.

'(Everything I Do) I Do It for You'

Bryan Adams

Written specifically for 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,' the love song classic was originally offered to Kate Bush, Annie Lennox and Lisa Stansfield, all of whom declined.

'How Do I Live'

LeAnn Rimes

Directly following LeAnn Rimes' performance of the love song at the 1998 Grammy Awards, Trisha Yearwood snatched up the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance...of the same song.

'We've Only Just Begun'

The Carpenters

This song of love was performed during a fictional marriage ceremony on 'The Steve Harvey Show.'

'When I'm With You'

Sheriff

Lead singer Freddy Curci is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for holding the longest note in a pop song in the final line of our No. 4 best love song ever.

'Right Here Waiting'

Richard Marx

American Idol contestant William Hung covered the love song on his solo album, 'Miracle: Happy Summer from William Hung.'

'Open Arms'

Journey

Guitarist Neal Schon "hated" this love song -- originally written by Jonathan Caine while in the band The Babys -- complaining that it sounded "kinda Mary Poppins."

'Because You Loved Me'

Celine Dion

The Canadian chanteuse's Grammy-winning love song hit was penned by songwriter extraordinaire Diane Warren, and was featured in the Robert Redford/Michelle Pfeiffer film 'Up Close & Personal.'

4 - Anything the Carpenters are singing, I'll wait until someone else is singing it to hear it. There was something about her voice that hit me like chewing gravel.

7. Thats a good selection, however, Lionel Richie's "Stuck on You", Eric Carmen's "Lose Control, Kenny Rogers' "Through the Years" and Dan Hills' "Sometimes When We Touch" should be on that list.

8. I thought the Titanic song My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion was gonna be number one...where's that one? And I agree Whitney Houston's version of, I Will Always Love You should definitely be on here.

9. To me it's like this... the great band Journey of the late 70's and 80's died when Steve Perry was forced out to take care of his health. The new band that calls themselves Journey is just a cover band of themselves. Even though Neal Schon, Ross Vallory and Jonathan Cain are there, there is no replacing Steve Perry and what he brought to the band, which is why they are already on the 3rd replacement singer. Sound alikes are just that, sound alikes, not the real deal. Give it up already and do what you should have done in the firt place, formed a new band with a new name and new songs.

11. I know and love every song on the list but #4 which after listening is so beautiful and I love it too. Wonder why I never heard it before. I tried to listen to LeAnn Rimes 'How do I live' instead it was 'Dreams' by Fleetwood Mac playing. Why is that, mistake?

You made the posted comment on Steve Perry of Journey, that they are nothing more than a cover band. You are sOoOooO RIGHT about that after Steve Perry left they should have created a new band with a new name and started all over again. another foolish band is capitalizing off the name is CHICAGO, another band that just couldn't let go of the nice money coming in using the CHICAGO name they just can't let go. They play and promote themselves brainwashing the new kids as though they are the originals. Nothing futher from the truth.

18. Faith Hill makes the other singers except Karen Carpenter and Celine Deon sound like beginners by comparison. Hers and the Carpenters were the best songs on this otherwise rather poor list. I could wish the instrumental music was not so loud as to drown out the lyrics of these songs. Only the Carpenters lyrics were intelligible. Most of the great love songs were written years ago when beautiful romantic music was greatly appreciated. I thought it would never cease--why would it? I was so very wrong.

28. Going back to the 70's, but my favorite is "Betcha by Golly, Wow" by the Stylistics. Best love song ever and the Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin" belongs there too.

To all the Journey haters....I never thought after Steve Perry there would be another Journey either.Guess what,there is.Listen to their latest album and tell me I'm wrong.Jon Cain,Neal Schon,and Ross Valory ARE Journey and have every right to be.Steve Perry needs to understand that he CAN be replaced and Arnel is awesome.Steve Perry was a cry baby anyway,and always had to have his way.Don't think he was the best when you didn't even know him.

49. Whomever compiled this list obviously is not old enough to have even heard of THE real love songs. Robert Goulet's "If ever I would leave you", WWI's "Song in the Wind of the Lilies", "Indian Love Call", "Side By Side" out of the Great Depression, "Unforgettable" - Nat King Cole, "Stranger on the Shore", "Ebb Tide", "Harbor Lights"; my goodness, people, do some real research to earn your paychecks!
