'Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album' is a star-studded affair that is sure to attract even the most passive soccer fan. With names like Shakira, R. Kelly, Wyclef and Pitbull performing alongside African artists, it is a celebration of African culture as well as the international love affair with the sport. The compilation consists of 12 tracks, including the Official Song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, 'Waka Waka (This Time For Africa),' by Shakira and Freshlyground, the Official Anthem 'Sign of a Victory' by R. Kelly and Soweto Spiritual Singers, and the Official Mascot song, 'Game on by Pitbull,' by TKZee and Dario G. Proceeds from the album will benefit FIFA's "20 Centers for 2010" initiative, whose aim is to achieve positive social change through football by building twenty Football for Hope centers for public health, education and football across Africa, and other African charities.
'Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)' and 'Sign of a Victory' will both be performed at the Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium, and it's easy to see why. 'Sign of Victory' -- which will be performed at the Opening Ceremonies -- is an uplifting number, worthy of it's title. Both R. Kelly's signature voice and the Soweto Spiritual Singers' beautiful harmonies are on full display, backed by the constant beat of African drums, it builds to a climactic crescendo that even Kelly's unnecessary use of auto-tune can't ruin.
And if 'Sign of Victory' is the warm up, 'Waka Waka' is definitely the war song. To be performed by Shakira and the South African band Freshlyground before the championship match, the Official 2010 World Cup song is a thumper; less of a build up than a celebration of the impending "war." In fact, the opening line literally means, "You're a good solider," and the chorus is pulled from a popular '80s song 'Zangaléwa' (by a Cameroonian band originally known as Golden Sounds, who later changed their name to Zangaléwa because the song was so popular) that was originally meant to be a criticism of the oppressive Cameroonian military. Perfect to get pumped up to before the big match.
Other notable highlights include Matisyahu on 'One Day,' John Legend on the track 'Move on Up,' and a closing message from Nelson Mandela. You can hear these songs, as well as the entire 'Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album' (for free) from now through this Sunday, June 6, at AOL's Full CD Listening Party.
