The Allman Brothers Band's singer and keyboardist Gregg Allman had a successful liver transplant surgery on June 23 at the Mayo clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. The legendary rocker is expected to make a full recovery from the operation. According to Spinner, Allman needed the surgery because of complications stemming from Hepatitis C and, of course, the damage he did to his liver during years of self-admitted heavy drinking, early in his career.
"I feel pretty good, considering everything that's happened," Allman said in a statement. "Everybody involved here, my doctors and nurses in the hospital and all the Allman Brothers fans, they've just all been great."
Allman's illness had caused the band to hold off on any tour plans for this summer, and it is not known when he will be able to get back on a stage again. However, Allman is confident that day will come: "Every day is a gift, and I can't wait to get back on the road making music with my friends."
