John Legend & the Roots team up for Levi's Pioneer Sessions series, releasing a cover of Ernie Hines' 1970 classic 'Our Generation.' Contributing to Levi's ongoing project, Legend & the Roots not only picked the Motown, funk-sounding track because of Hines' influence, but also the fact that the song inspired other artists before them, such as Pete Rock & CL Smooth, who sampled 'Our Generation' on their 1992 hip-hop track 'Straighten It Out.'
What's more, is 'Our Generation' will also be featured on an upcoming Legend & the Roots collaboration album, titled 'Wake Up!,' available Sept. 21. "A lot of what we did was try to bring songs that have been sampled or should be sampled or sample-able to make the album," Legend told MTV News about their forthcoming concept album. "It just makes sense to [also] do the song [for Levi's]."
'Our Generation' is now available (as a free download) at the Levi Pioneer Sessions Site, and can also be heard on AOL Radio's New R&B First station.
