Jerry Garcia Movie Script, Director Announced

The upcoming biographical motion picture about former Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia steps closer to reality this week with dual announcements regarding the director and scriptwriter chosen for the much anticipated project.

First off, according to Spinner, writer Topper Lillan -- best known for writing 2000's big-screen sci-fi adaption of the popular role-playing game 'Dungeons & Dragons' -- has reportedly completed work on the script for the Garcia biopic. The story focuses on the guitarist's adventure-filled life before joining the Grateful Dead, undoubtedly the most popular improvisational rock band of all time.

Secondly, Amir Bar-Lev, who recently earned praise for 'The Tillman Story,' a documentary about football player and war hero Pat Tillman, has agreed to direct the so-far untitled Garcia project. The movie will tackle notable life events, such as the wood-chopping accident that cost Garcia part of his middle finger, the early life loss of his father, and the 1961 car accident that caused him to focus fully on his musical career, among others.

Casting for the project is expected to begin shortly, and the release date and production schedule for the movie has yet to be announced. While you're waiting, you can listen to the music of the Grateful Dead on AOL Radio's Jam Bands station.
