10 Best Rock Songs of 2012 (So Far)

AOL Radio's Top 10 Rock Songs of 2012 (so far) might have a curveball or two for some fans. With some of the biggest names in rock music (Linkin Park, Shinedown, Chevelle, etc.), putting albums out recently, it's a tough decision to determine the top 10 songs of the year (thus far). So, we decided to put it in the hands of the listeners. Did the heavy hitters take all ten spots? Or, did some of the newer bands slip in and make their presence known? Find out what songs made the cut below.
'Even If I Could'
Papa Roach
With the moderate success of Papa Roach's last album, 'Time For Annihilation', back in 2010, it was unsure whether the band would ever reach the level of success they had in the early to mid 2000's. The latest release from Papa Roach came off the Avenger Assemble: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture soundtrack. 'Even If I Could' is a promotional track for the soundtrack and is not expected to be on the upcoming 8th studio album from the band. With the hint of electronic sound in the rock sound that Papa Roach has helped revolutionize, 'Even If I Could' sounds just like a Papa Roach song (which it should). Papa Roach is set to be one of the headliners for this year's Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival. Their new track starts off our countdown in the #10 spot.

'Put Down The Drink'
Formed in 2005 in Omaha, Neb., Emphatic gained their recognition in 2011 with the release of their third album, 'Damage'. With two independent albums released in 2005 and 2008, Empahtic was slowly gaining their popularity, but it wasn't until signing with Atlantic Records in 2009 and the release of 'Damage' in 2011 that the band exploded onto the scene. The debut single from 'Damage', 'Bounce' was an instant hit for Emphatic (reaching number 23 on the Mainstream Rock chart). The bands third single, 'Put Down The Drink' is another sign of the talent that Empahtic has. Rock fans can expect big things from the six-piece rock group in the future. 'Put Down The Drink' takes the number nine spot on our countdown of the Top 10 Rock Songs of 2012 (so far).
'Boss's Daughter'
Pop Evil
Though the band has gone through their fair share of ups and downs over the past few years, Pop Evil came back strong with the release of their second studio album, 'War Of Angels'. After two singles reaching the top ten on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts ('Last Man Standing' and 'Monster You Made'), 'Boss's Daughter' followed the same pattern, reaching number seven. If the success of Pop Evil's third single wasn't doing well enough, the band went and got Mick Mars (Motley Crüe) and Playboy Playmate Miss July 2011, Jess Hinton, to star in the music video for the song. Pop Evil will be one of the supporting bands for the "Trespass America Festival" featuring Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, and more. Their continued success has helped them land another strong single, and the 8th spot on our countdown of the Top 10 Rock Songs of 2012 (so far).
Entertainment One
'Hat's Off to the Bull'
With six studio albums, 14 singles, and four number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, Chevelle has been writing hit records since the release of 'Point #1' in 1999. With their latest album, 'Hats Off To The Bull', Chevelle took more of the rock sound from their past and channeled it into the progressive-rock sound heard on the album. Following up 'Face To The Floor' meant getting the same vibe going and working to keep rising on the charts. When they released the title track, 'Hats Off To The Bull', it did exactly that. 'Hats Off To The Bull' continues to be the most spun song on Active Rock stations this week, and it has landed at number seven on our countdown.
'Eyes Wide Open'
With the release of Staind's 7th studio album (self titled), fans got a taste of the heavier side of Staind that made them popular back in the late 90's and early 2000's. The album was highly anticipated due to the success that front man Aaron Lewis was having in his solo career. 'Staind' debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200. Following the success of the lead single, 'Not Again', the second single, 'Eyes Wide Open', followed suit with the heavier sound from Staind. Though the song never reached the level of success as its predecessor, it was a good indication of what Staind was going for and how much the band as a whole had matured with their sound. 'Eyes Wide Open' takes over the number six spot on our countdown.

'Coming Down'
Five Finger Death Punch
'American Capitalist' hit the rock scene in the beginning of October last year, but the mayhem loving fans of Five Finger Death Punch (5FDP) have been around since the bands start in 2007 with the release of 'The Way Of The Fist'. After releasing the first single ('Under And Over It') off their latest album, 5FDP has been tearing up the airwaves of rock stations nationwide. 'Coming Down' is the latest single off 'American Capitalist' and it continues the success that 5FDP has been experiencing. It seems that every time 5FDP releases a new album, it charts higher than the previous. It will be interesting to see what happens when the band releases their fourth studio album. With 'Coming Down' continuing to rise higher on the Billboard charts, 5FDP has landed the number five spot on our countdown of the Top 10 Rock Songs of 2012 (so far).
Prospect Park
'Anthem Of The Lonely'
Nine Lashes
Birmingham, Ala. natives, Nine Lashes, have been making some noise recently with their single 'Anthem Of The Lonely'. Though the band released their first album independently in 2009, it wasn't until their release of 'World We View' this February that they began gaining some exposure. With the help of Trevor McNevan (Thousand Foot Krutch), Nine Lashes' album hit number 43 on the Billboard Rock charts, and number 17 on the Christian Rock charts. 'Anthem Of The Lonely' is just the beginning of what looks to be the start of a promising career for Nine Lashes.
Tooth & Nail Records
The 14th single released from Shinedown was nothing different than the previous 13... It rocks, it's catchy, and it reached the top 5 on the US Mainstream Rock chart from Billboard. 'Bully' is the lead single from Shinedown's fourth studio album, 'Amarylis', which was their first release on Roadrunner Records (except in the US where it was released on Atlantic Records). It's also the bands highest charting album to date. With the bands continuing success, and headlining the upcoming Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival, 'Bully' has landed in the number three spot on our countdown.
'Bitter End'
The Veer Union
With the release of their second studio album 'Divide The Blackened Sky', The Veer Union released their single 'Bitter End'. The Vancouver natives produced, recorded, and wrote the majority of the album with the exception of 'Bitter End'. Produced by Brian Howes (Nickelback, Hinder, Puddle Of Mudd, etc.) and mixed by Jay Van Poederooyen, 'Bitter End' is the anthem for overcoming adversity and working towards making the future better for yourself. 'Bitter End' is the continuation of success from the bands debut album, and is continuing to gain momentum on radio stations nationwide. It also lands the number two spot on our countdown of the Top 10 Rock Songs of 2012 (so far).
Adaptation Records
'Burn it Down'
Linkin Park
Since Linkin Park's debut album, 'Hybrid Theory', the band has sold over 50 million albums worldwide. With 'Hybrid Theory' being the best-selling album of the 21st century, Linkin Park has been making hits since 2000, and their latest single 'Burn It Down' is no exception to the standard that LP has set for themselves. 'Burn It Down' is the first single off the band's upcoming 5th studio album, 'Living Things'. It reached number 30 on the Billboard 100, but reached number one on the Billboard Rock Songs chart. With the new and evolved sound, 'Burn It Down' is the perfect example of how Linkin Park has been able to stay relevant and become one of the most popular rock bands of today. 'Burn It Down' wraps up our countdown at the number one spot.
