'I Will Wait'
Mumford & Sons
After being the biggest selling album of 2012 in it's debut week, the second studio album from Mumford & Sons, 'Babel,' was at the top of many people's lists for the best album of the year. The platinum selling album spawned the lead single, 'I Will Wait,' which is the groups highest-charting song in both the US and UK (to date). The song peaked at number one on both the Alternative and Rock charts on Billboard. The indie folk rock song kicks off our countdown of AOL Radio's Top 10 Alternative songs of 2012.
Though the song didn't gain popularity in the US until this year, 'Too Close' was originally released in April of 2011 off his debut album, 'The Lateness of the Hour.' 'Too Close' brought Alex Clare to new and greater heights. The now platinum selling single has been featured by various Major League Baseball teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cincinnati Reds, and was used as the soundtrack to Microsoft's commercial for Internet Explorer. The single peaked at number one on the Alternative chart on Billboard.
The Black Keys
Nominated for three Grammy Awards (Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Record of the Year), 'Lonely Boy' was the lead single from the seventh studio album from Akron, Ohio's, The Black Keys. The song peaked at number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and also reached number one on both the Rock and Alternative Billboard charts. Since it's release, 'Lonely Boy' was used by various sports teams including the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, and the Buffalo Sabres. Add on the countless commercials, video game soundtracks, and the growing popularity of a band that recently sold out their first stadium tour and it's easy to see how The Black Keys landed number eight on our countdown of the Top 10 Alternative songs of 2012.
The number seven spot on our countdown of the Top 10 Alternative songs of 2012 lands us in Denver, Col. American folk rockers, The Lumineers, impressed critics worldwide after the successful release of their self-titled debut studio album in April. The lead single, 'Ho Hey,' was the worlds first exposure to the trio, and with a lot of positive responses. Since the release, 'Ho Hey' has received platinum status in both the US and Canada. The smash crossover hit landed on the Billboard chart for five different categories (Hot 100, Pop Songs, Rock Songs, Alternative Songs, and Adult Pop Songs). Though the band has released their follow-up single, 'Ho Hey' still continues to be a strong song for The Lumineers.
Of Monsters And Men
One of the biggest bands to explode onto the music scene this year was Iceland's, Of Monsters and Men. After topping the music charts in their homeland, the groups debut album, 'My Head Is An Animal,' was re-released in the US in the beginning of April to the pleasure of many eager fans. The lead single from the album, 'Little Talks,' exploded onto the Billboard charts, reaching number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs. Since it's re-release in the US, 'Little Talks' has sold over a million copies, earning platinum status from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). Their impressive and successful debut helps land Of Monsters and Men in the number six spot on our countdown.
The sleeper hit for Neon Trees drops into the number five spot on AOL Radio's countdown of the Top 10 Alternative songs of 2012. 'Everybody Talks' was released almost a year ago as the lead single from Neon Trees's second studio album, 'Picture Show.' 'Everybody Talks' slowly climbed up the charts bit by bit. Since it's release, the song has become the bands highest charting, and first top 10, single. The 60's pop-inspired tune has since sold over two million copies of the single.
Originally released on their 'Continued Silence EP,' Imagine Dragons' platinum selling single, 'It's Time' has been one of the most popular songs of the year. After charting on the Billboard Alternative Top 10 for 30 consecutive weeks, 'It's Time' launched Imagine Dragons to new horizons. The song peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 22, and landed the number four spot on the Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts. After multiple late night show appearances and an upcoming North American tour in the beginning of 2013 to support their new full-length album, 'Night Visions,' the Las Vegas rockers are still on the uprise and will be a name to be reckoned with next year. 'It's Time' takes the number four spot on our countdown of AOL Radio's Top 10 Alternative songs of 2012.
'Gold On The Ceiling'
The Black Keys
The follow-up single to their smash hit, 'Lonely Boy,' 'Gold On The Ceiling' continued to impress fans and critics. Though the bands second single off 'El Camino' didn't chart as successfully as 'Lonely Boy,' it still proved to do fairly well. Reaching number 94 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as number 1 and 2 on the Alternative and Rock charts (respectfully), 'Gold On The Ceiling' lands at number three on the countdown of AOL Radio's Top 10 Alternative songs of 2012.
'Burn It Down'
Since Linkin Park's debut album, 'Hybrid Theory', the band has sold over 50 million albums worldwide. With 'Hybrid Theory' being the best-selling album of the 21st century, Linkin Park has been making hits since 2000. 'Burn It Down' is no exception to the standard that LP has set for themselves. It was the first single off the band's 5th studio album, 'Living Things'. It reached number 30 on the Billboard 100, but reached number one on the Billboard Rock Songs chart. With the new and evolved sound, 'Burn It Down' is the perfect example of how Linkin Park has been able to stay relevant and become one of the most popular rock bands of today. 'Burn It Down' slides into the number two spot on our countdown.
Though Fun. has been around in the music scene since 2008, it wasn't until the release of their smash single, 'We Are Young,' that the band started to become a household name. Their follow-up, and title track to their second studio album, 'Some Nights,' is arguably just as well received as their cross-over smash lead single. Already receiving platinum selling status in six countries, the sleeper track climbed the Billboard charts until peaking at number three on the Hot 100 chart. It also landed the number one spot on the Rock Songs, Alternative Songs, and Adult Pop Songs charts. 'Some Nights' spent seven months on the charts and has become another huge single for the now world-famous New York indie band. 'Some Nights' takes the number one spot on our countdown of the Top 10 Alternative songs of 2012.
